Norton help: fix common Norton 360 problems

Step-by-step fixes for the Norton problems people search for most, written by independent technicians. We are not Norton and not affiliated with them. If you have an active subscription, Norton's own support is included free and you can contact them at any time.

Try the steps below first. Many Norton problems take a few minutes to fix and don't need anyone's help. If you get stuck, we can fix it over a secure remote session for a flat $59, and there's no charge if we can't fix it.

Norton says my subscription expired, but I already paid

This is the Norton problem we see most. The plan almost always exists. It's just attached to a different Norton account than the one signed in on your computer.

  1. Find the email address your purchase receipt was sent to. If you bought Norton in a store, find the product key on the card or receipt.
  2. Sign in to your account on Norton's own website with that email and check your subscriptions. Confirm the plan is active and how many devices it covers.
  3. Open Norton on your computer and check which account it's signed in to. If it's a different email, sign out and sign in with the account that holds the plan.
  4. If you have a retail product key, enter it in your Norton account to add the time to your subscription.
  5. If the plan shows as active but Norton still says expired, restart the computer and run LiveUpdate in Norton so it refreshes.

Watch out: an "expired" or "your PC is at risk" warning that appears in your web browser, with a phone number or a renew button that goes somewhere other than Norton's own site, is usually a scam page, not Norton. Real Norton alerts come from the Norton app on your computer. How to tell if a pop-up is fake.

Norton won't install or says installation failed

  1. Uninstall any other antivirus first. McAfee often comes preinstalled on new laptops, and two antivirus programs block each other. Use Settings, then Apps, in Windows, and restart afterwards.
  2. Download the installer again from your Norton account instead of using an old file.
  3. If an earlier Norton install is broken, Norton offers a free Remove and Reinstall tool on its support site that cleans up the old copy and installs it fresh.
  4. Make sure Windows is up to date and the computer's date and time are correct. A wrong date causes download and activation errors.

Norton is slowing down my computer

  1. Check for a second antivirus. Two real-time scanners running at once is the most common cause of a sudden slowdown.
  2. Let one full scan finish. Norton uses more resources during its first scan or after a large update, then settles down.
  3. Make sure Norton is on its current version, especially on Windows 11.
  4. Turn off extra features you don't use, such as browser extensions you didn't ask for.

Norton and Windows Defender: do I need both?

No. When Norton is installed and working, Windows turns off Microsoft Defender's real-time scanning so the two don't conflict. If Defender is still scanning alongside Norton, Norton may not be registered with Windows properly, and reinstalling Norton usually fixes it. If you uninstall Norton, Defender switches itself back on.

How to turn off Norton auto-renewal

Sign in to your Norton account, open your subscriptions and turn off automatic renewal. You keep protection until the end of the period you've already paid for. If you were charged for a renewal you didn't want, contact Norton directly as soon as possible and check its current refund policy, since refunds depend on how long ago you were charged.

Only Norton can refund a Norton charge. Never give bank details or remote access to someone who calls or emails offering to "process your refund". That is one of the most common scams targeting antivirus customers.

When to call us

Call (850) 828-0416 or request a callback if these steps didn't work, if you'd rather not do them yourself, or if something else seems wrong, such as fake alerts, programs you didn't install, or a slowdown that started suddenly. $59 flat per fix, and no fee if we can't fix it. We don't sell Norton subscriptions and can't renew or refund them for you.
